Faculty Leader: Mr. Feenan
Science makes a positive impact on people’s lives. In many cases, Science saves lives or allows individuals to find meaning and impact in their own lives. Scientists use their expertise to develop real solutions for real problems. Remedies for many of the challenges that face our world will be developed by researchers who devote their whole lives to the pursuit of science.
The Science faculty believes in ensuring all students leave DEC with a good grasp of the scientific approach and to look at their world with an inquisitive and analytical mindset. A scientist’s first response is ‘why?’. The faculty believes in making sure that students enjoy what they are learning and can relate it to the real world. The beauty of Science is that it encapsulates all aspects of skills, attributes and treads across a wide spectrum of subjects. We don’t just believe science is for the classroom, it is something we see and hear all around us. The entire history of mankind and our individual exploration of our experience is defined by ‘Why?’. The Science faculty will equip students to find the answers to these questions. Beyond the curriculum, we hope to develop students who enquire beyond our current understanding and further the understanding of our Universe and existence.

Curriculum and Assessment
Years 7-11
All students at DEC will follow the Edexcel Combined or Triple Science programme. Students will be selected for the Triple Science curriculum at the end of Year 9. This decision will be based on ability, commitment to study and the desire to study Science at KS5 and beyond. Triple Science is a significant commitment, ending in the acquisition of an additional GCSE. This pathway will also require sitting longer, more challenging exams. As a result of this additional demand, the Triple Science cohort will be selected in discussion with class teachers and parent/guardians. The Head of Faculty will make the final decision as to this cohort.
Most students will complete the Combined Science pathway. This includes elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students in Combined Science will have a pathway to post 16 study in the Sciences (dependent on meeting entry requirements) in vocational or A level study.
At DEC students will begin the GCSE specification from year 7 and will be exposed to, and assessed using, GCSE exam style questioning. This is carefully structured to ensure that students have a foundational basis of skills and knowledge before they enter the final 3 years of their Secondary phase education.
Science skills are highly sought in the working well. Skills such as data analysis are key factors in employability in the 21st Century workplace. Students with a secure understanding of evidence based analysis are valued highly in the modern workplace.
In addition to our Combined and Triple Science pathways, we have begun an Astronomy course. This is currently available as an option at the end of year 8 and gives an opportunity for all students to gain a valued and academically rigorous qualification. This course differs from the traditional Science curriculum in focusing on a specific area of study. Students completing this course will be able to apply for A levels in Science in addition to boasting a GCSE qualification in Science that will highlight them to post 16 providers.
